About Conesus Lake Wildlife Management Area

Conesus Lake Wildlife Management Area is a protected natural space along the western shore of Conesus Lake in New York, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, fishing, and tranquil outdoor experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Conesus Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located along the western shoreline of Conesus Lake, the westernmost and largest of New York’s Finger Lakes. This approximately 615-acre preserve encompasses wetlands, open water, shrub swamps, and forested habitat, which provide critical habitat for diverse fish and wildlife species. The area is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) to support wildlife populations, particularly waterfowl and other migratory birds, as well as native fish species. The terrain includes gently sloping shores and marshy areas that serve as breeding and feeding grounds for many birds, including herons, ducks, and occasionally bald eagles. Conesus Lake itself is well-known for fishing, especially for species such as bass, walleye, and yellow perch, making the WMA popular with anglers who also enjoy the peace of the natural surroundings. Recreational activities include birdwatching, hiking, and seasonal hunting, with specific regulations to ensure conservation goals are met. The WMA does not feature developed campgrounds or extensive trail systems but offers informal access points for visitors seeking quiet nature experiences and access to the lake. Located within Livingston County, the area is easily accessible from nearby towns such as Conesus, Geneseo, and Livonia. Conesus Lake WMA plays an important role in regional conservation efforts by preserving lakeshore wetlands that help maintain water quality and provide essential habitat in a largely developed region. Visitors value this area for its quiet, less crowded environment and opportunities to connect with New York’s natural lake and wetland ecosystem.
