About Community Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary in Belize is a community-driven conservation area dedicated to protecting the endangered black howler monkey and preserving its natural habitat through sustainable tourism and local stewardship.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) is a unique conservation initiative located along the Belize River Valley in northern Belize. Established in 1985, it encompasses private and communal lands covering a stretch of subtropical forest and riparian habitat supporting the endangered black howler monkey (locally referred to as 'baboon'). The sanctuary protects over 18,000 acres of forest fragmented by agricultural lands but maintained through an innovative approach where local landowners voluntarily conserve habitat on their property. This community-based model has helped increase baboon populations while also promoting education, sustainable livelihoods, and eco-tourism. The area features dense tropical forests, riverine edges, and cultivated farmland, offering visitors a vibrant biodiversity hotspot. Visitors can explore guided walking tours along trails to observe the howler monkeys as well as a variety of bird species and other wildlife. Educational outreach and cultural experiences within local villages highlight the intersection of conservation and community life. The sanctuary is accessible year-round and is an important destination for wildlife viewing and learning about grassroots environmental stewardship. The visitor experience combines wildlife watching with cultural encounters, including local crafts and traditional practices. The CBS stands as a successful example of community-led conservation, balancing human needs with ecosystem protection.
