Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Commander Islands Nature Reserve is situated in the far northern reaches of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing both land and marine environments. This reserve covers the Commander Islands, including Bering and Medny Islands, known for their rugged coastlines, tundra landscapes, and rich marine biodiversity. The reserve's history is deeply intertwined with Russian exploration; Vitus Bering, the Danish explorer in Russian service, perished on one of these islands in the 18th century.
