Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Chickasawhatchee Wildlife Management Area, located in the southwest part of Georgia, spans over 19,700 acres of varied terrain. The area is characterized by its mix of wetlands, upland forests, and meandering waterways, which provide a diverse habitat for a wide array of flora and fauna. Once a site of extensive logging, the area has been reclaimed to support wildlife and recreational activities. Today, visitors can engage in hiking, bird watching, and seasonal hunting. The management area is known for its significant populations of deer, turkey, and small game and is especially popular among bird enthusiasts hoping to glimpse woodpeckers and migratory songbirds in their natural habitat. Besides recreation, Chickasawhatchee plays a vital role in conservation efforts focused on preserving native Southeastern U.S. ecosystems and protecting endangered species such as the gopher tortoise.
