Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in St. Michaels, Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum covers 18 acres along the waterfront, offering an extensive exploration of the Chesapeake Bay's maritime heritage. The museum's layout across 12 buildings features exhibits on the history, environment, and the people of the Chesapeake Bay region. Visitors can admire historical vessels, including working boats and recreations of classic Chesapeake watercraft. One of the museum's key highlights is the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, a relocated historic screwpile-style lighthouse that now serves as a central exhibit. The museum is also known for its working boatyard, where traditional boatbuilding techniques are practiced and preserved. Educational programs and special events, such as the annual Watermen’s Appreciation Day, attract visitors throughout the year. Beyond the exhibits, the museum offers scenic views of the Miles River, making it an ideal spot for photography and quiet relaxation. The combination of history, continuous preservation efforts, and the surrounding natural beauty makes the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum a captivating destination for learning about aquatic traditions and local waterway ecology.
