About Cherokee WMA

Cherokee Wildlife Management Area offers expansive forested terrain ideal for hunting, wildlife observation, and outdoor recreation in West Virginia’s Appalachian region.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Cherokee Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers a substantial area of rugged hills and hardwood forests in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The landscape is characterized by mixed oak, hickory, and maple forests with several small streams providing vital water sources for diverse wildlife. The WMA was established to maintain habitats for game species such as black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and squirrel, making it a key destination for hunters during designated seasons. Besides hunting, visitors enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, and angling in the smaller streams within the area. The terrain features rolling hills with elevations ranging approximately between 1,000 and 2,000 feet, offering scenic views and quiet natural settings. Cherokee WMA is managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) with a strong focus on sustainable wildlife habitat management and public enjoyment. Visitors find a peaceful wilderness experience with opportunities to spot a variety of bird species and other native wildlife. The WMA’s proximity to Charleston, WV, makes it accessible for day trips or extended outdoor excursions. Seasonal shifts bring vibrant fall colors and spring wildflowers, contributing to its year-round appeal.
