Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Carlyle Lake Wildlife Management Area is located in southern Illinois and encompasses thousands of acres around Carlyle Lake, the state's largest reservoir, covering approximately 26,000 acres of water and more than 38,000 acres of surrounding land managed for conservation and recreation. The WMA features a mix of habitats including hardwood forests, wetlands, grasslands, and open water that support a wide variety of wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and numerous fish species. Established in the mid-20th century following the construction of Carlyle Lake by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the area serves as a vital habitat and popular destination for hunters, anglers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Recreational activities include fishing for prized species like bass and crappie, boating on expansive lake waters, hiking and mountain biking on several trail systems, wildlife photography, and seasonal hunting. The WMA also features boat ramps, shooting ranges, and interpretive signage that enhance visitor experiences. With its flat to gently rolling landscape and extensive shoreline, the Carlyle Lake Wildlife Management Area is an accessible and versatile destination that combines natural beauty with well-maintained recreational amenities. Whether seeking solitude in nature, birding rare migratory waterfowl, or engaging in family outings and water sports, the WMA attracts visitors year-round.
