About Blacksville State Wildlife Management Area

Blacksville State Wildlife Management Area offers diverse opportunities for hunting, wildlife observing, and hiking across its heavily forested landscape in northern West Virginia.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Blacksville State Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers approximately 1,702 acres in Monongalia County, West Virginia, near the small community of Blacksville. The area is characterized by mixed hardwood forests, rolling hills, and small streams, providing habitat for abundant wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrel, and various small game. The WMA is managed primarily for hunting and wildlife conservation under the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Outdoor recreation includes hunting during regulated seasons, wildlife watching, hiking on informal paths, and limited fishing in smaller water bodies. The landscape is typical of West Virginia's Allegheny Plateau with an elevation ranging roughly from 1,200 to 1,600 feet. There are no developed campgrounds or extensive trail systems, making it a quiet destination for hunters and nature enthusiasts seeking a low-impact experience. The area is valued for its role in habitat preservation and as a natural corridor supporting local biodiversity. Visitors often enjoy the reduced crowds compared to state parks and the opportunity to engage with the landscape in a more solitary, wilderness-like setting. While not renowned for landmark features, the area's forested slopes and open clearings provide scenic rural views and excellent seasonal color during the fall months.
