Black River Gorges National Park, located in the southwestern part of Mauritius, spans over 16,820 acres and is renowned for its unique biodiversity and magnificent landscapes. The park was established in 1994 to protect the island's remaining native forests, which habituate a number of endemic species. The geography is characterized by dense forests, rolling hills, and deep gorges, offering breathtaking views. The park is home to over 300 species of flowering plants and many bird species, including the endangered pink pigeon and Mauritius kestrel. Popular recreational activities include hiking on one of its well-marked trails, bird watching, and picnicking. Among the notable landmarks are Black River Peak, the highest point in Mauritius, and the picturesque Alexandra Falls. The park also contains historical sites such as the ruins of ancient forts, providing a glimpse into the island's past.
