Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Blaauwberg Nature Reserve encompasses approximately 300 hectares of coastal dune ecosystem on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. The reserve is situated in the Western Cape province and is renowned for preserving the unique Cape Flats Dune Strandveld vegetation as well as other indigenous fynbos species. The landscape includes sandy dunes, coastal flats, and a small yet biodiverse wetland area. The reserve holds significant historical and ecological value, with fossil records dating back millions of years and evidence of human activity from the Stone Age era. Visitors to Blaauwberg enjoy a combination of outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, birdwatching, and beach walks along the adjacent coastline. One of the reserve’s highlights is the panoramic viewpoint overlooking Table Bay and Robben Island, offering spectacular sunsets and photo opportunities. The reserve also serves as a refuge for several endangered plant species endemic to the Cape Floristic Region and provides habitat for a variety of bird species such as the black harrier and several coastal seabirds.
