Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Berkshire Natural Resources Council (BNRC) lands encompass over 14,000 acres of protected forests, wetlands, meadows, and waterways primarily located throughout Berkshire County in western Massachusetts. These lands consist of multiple conservation preserves maintained for ecological protection and public enjoyment. Geographically, the properties span a range of terrain including rolling hills, broad river valleys, rocky summits, and mature hardwood forests. Common tree species include maples, oaks, birches, and eastern hemlock, supporting diverse wildlife such as white-tailed deer, bobcats, and numerous bird species. Many BNRC preserves follow tributaries of the Housatonic River, creating valuable riparian habitats. Historically, much of the land was once privately owned farmland and homesteads before being conserved to prevent fragmentation and encourage natural regeneration.
