About Béjar Mountains Natural Park

Béjar Mountains Natural Park is a striking protected area in central Spain known for its rugged peaks, dense forests, and diverse flora and fauna, offering extensive hiking, wildlife viewing, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Béjar Mountains Natural Park (Parque Natural de la Sierra de Béjar) is located in the southern part of the province of Salamanca, within the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. The park encompasses the core of the Sierra de Béjar mountain range, part of the larger Central System, with rugged terrain characterized by dramatic peaks, glacial cirques, and deep valleys. Its highest summit, Canchal de la Ceja, reaches an elevation of approximately 2,430 meters (7,972 feet), making it one of the highest parts of the Iberian Peninsula. The park is ecologically significant, sheltering mixed forests of oak, beech, and pine, alongside alpine meadows and high mountain shrubland. It is home to a diverse array of wildlife including roe deer, wild boar, golden eagles, and several endemic birds and reptiles.

Historically, the area has a rich cultural past with traces of ancient shepherding and mining activities that shaped the landscape and local traditions. Outdoor enthusiasts frequent the park for its varied hiking trails, mountain biking routes, and winter sports in nearby ski areas. Key landmarks include glacial lakes such as Laguna Grande de Gredos, scenic lookout points, and the Pico del Fraile. The park's appeal lies in its relatively unspoiled natural beauty, peaceful wilderness, and accessibility from nearby towns. It serves as a prime destination for lovers of mountainous landscapes and ecological richness in Spain.
