About Bavarian Forest Nature Park

Bavarian Forest Nature Park offers a diverse outdoor experience featuring extensive forests, rolling hills, and cultural heritage sites, making it a premier destination for hiking, wildlife observation, and nature appreciation in southeastern Germany.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Bavarian Forest Nature Park, located in the southeastern part of Bavaria, Germany, covers an extensive landscape characterized by dense mixed forests, heathlands, meadows, and peat bogs. Established to promote nature conservation alongside sustainable regional development, the park encompasses much of the Bavarian Forest's diverse ecosystems. The geography features the Bavarian Forest Mountains, with peaks such as Großer Arber reaching nearly 1,456 meters, making it the highest point in the region. This area is part of a larger transboundary forest extending into the Czech Republic and is an important ecological corridor for native flora and fauna.

Ecologically, the nature park is home to a variety of species including lynx, capercaillie, and rare orchids. Its old-growth forests of spruce, fir, and beech provide critical habitats. The park supports traditional rural lifestyles, with small villages, historic glassworks, and shepherding still active in the area.

Outdoor recreation is a key attraction, with an extensive trail system that includes hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Notable landmarks include the Großer Arber summit, the ancient Lusen peak with its boulder fields, and the idyllic Schwarzenbach Reservoir. The park also offers several nature education centers, such as the Hans-Eisenmann-Haus and the National Park Visitor Centers nearby.

Visitors appreciate the balance of natural beauty, cultural sites, and well-maintained recreational infrastructure. Wildlife watchers enjoy spotting rare species in the forest, while hikers benefit from panoramic viewpoints and well-marked routes. Seasonal festivals and local craftsmanship add cultural depth to the visitor experience, making Bavarian Forest Nature Park a well-rounded destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
