About Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary

Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary is a rare freshwater swamp preserve in Maryland, home to one of the northernmost natural populations of bald cypress trees, offering visitors peaceful boardwalk walks and excellent wildlife viewing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, located near Earleville in Cecil County, Maryland, protects a unique freshwater swamp ecosystem dominated by mature bald cypress trees (Taxodium distichum). This sanctuary represents one of the northernmost natural populations of this species on the U.S. Atlantic Coastal Plain. Covering roughly 100 acres of swamp and surrounding uplands, the area is characterized by saturated soils, slow-moving waters, and a rich diversity of wetland plants and animals. The swamp’s towering cypress trees, some over 100 feet tall, create a distinctive landscape uncommon in Maryland's Mid-Atlantic environment. The sanctuary was established in 1957 through the efforts of The Nature Conservancy to preserve this ecologically significant habitat from development and degradation. Visitors can explore the swamp via a quarter-mile elevated boardwalk that provides close views of the cypress knees, mosses, and birds that thrive in the swampy conditions. Wildlife commonly seen includes great blue herons, green herons, wood ducks, and various songbirds. The boardwalk terminates at an observation platform overlooking the heart of the swamp. The sanctuary also hosts guided nature programs, bird walks, and educational events emphasizing wetland conservation. While small in scale, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary draws nature lovers, birders, and photographers seeking to experience this rare ecosystem up close. Its peaceful environment and accessible trails make it a suitable destination for all ages and skill levels. The sanctuary is managed by The Nature Conservancy and offers a quiet retreat from the surrounding agricultural landscape.
