About Basingstoke Canal

The Basingstoke Canal is a historic waterway running through Surrey and Hampshire, offering peaceful boating, walking, and wildlife watching opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Basingstoke Canal stretches approximately 32 miles from the River Wey Navigation at Byfleet, Surrey, to West Byfleet in Hampshire, England. Constructed in the late 18th century and opened in 1794, it was initially built to connect Basingstoke to London via an inland water route. The canal passes through a mix of rural and semi-urban landscapes, including wetlands, woodlands, and farmland, providing valuable habitats for diverse wildlife. It supports populations of rare plants, birds such as kingfishers and herons, and aquatic species like dragonflies and water vole. Despite periods of decline and partial closure during the 20th century, extensive restoration efforts have revived much of the canal for recreational use. Today, it is managed primarily by the Basingstoke Canal Authority and various conservation groups. Visitors can enjoy boating along restored sections, fishing, walking along towpaths, cycling, and birdwatching. Key landmarks include the Greywell Tunnel, a notable 1230-yard long tunnel that is closed to navigation but popular for exploring the canal’s history. The canal features several locks and scenic bridges, many of which reflect its industrial heritage. Its tranquil surroundings and rich ecology make it an appealing destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quiet, low-impact nature experience near historic sites. Throughout the year, a range of community events and guided walks also invite visitors to engage with the canal's natural and cultural heritage.
