About Banna Strand Special Area of Conservation

Banna Strand Special Area of Conservation is a coastal dune and beach ecosystem known for its rich biodiversity and scenic sandy beaches, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and beach recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Banna Strand Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is located on the north side of Tralee Bay in County Kerry, Ireland. The area encompasses a continuous stretch of sandy beach and extensive coastal dune systems, which are among the best examples of a natural dune habitat on the west coast of Ireland. The dynamic dune landscape includes fixed dunes, mobile dunes, dune slacks, and salt marshes, creating a mosaic of habitats that support a diverse range of flora and fauna. Banna Strand is especially important for rare plant species such as marram grass (Ammophila arenaria), sea holly (Eryngium maritimum), and various orchid species, alongside important breeding grounds for birds like the meadow pipit and the skylark. The intertidal zone supports numerous invertebrates and serves as a valuable feeding site for migratory wildfowl. Historically, Banna Strand has been central to local coastal life, with its sands providing access to the Atlantic Ocean and influencing nearby communities. Recreational opportunities abound, with visitors drawn to its long sandy beach for walking, beachcombing, birdwatching, and seasonal windsurfing and kite surfing. The adjacent dunes provide scenic trail walks and nature appreciation, appealing to families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Protected under the EU Habitats Directive, Banna Strand SAC is managed to preserve its natural features and biodiversity, balancing conservation with public enjoyment. Its proximity to Tralee town and accessibility from regional roads make it a favored destination for both locals and tourists. The area's unspoiled natural beauty, combined with its ecological importance, creates an enriching outdoor experience grounded in nature conservation.
