About Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve

Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve is a protected marine area known for its exceptional coral reefs, rich biodiversity, and status as Mexico’s largest coral atoll. It offers world-class diving, snorkeling, and opportunities to explore pristine underwater ecosystems.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve is located off the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Mahahual. It is Mexico’s only coral atoll and one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere, comprising a crescent-shaped reef encircling a lagoon and three small mangrove cayes. This reserve covers over 144,000 acres of marine and island ecosystems, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, and sandy cays. The atoll’s reefs harbor an extraordinary array of marine life, including over 40 species of coral, numerous fish species, sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, and migrating whale sharks. Its ecological importance has earned it UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.

Historically, the area is notable for several well-preserved shipwrecks from the colonial period and famed pirate routes, making underwater archeology a key attraction. The coral reefs and submerged wrecks create one of the premier diving destinations in the Caribbean for both advanced and novice divers. Visitors can explore vibrant coral walls, swim with abundant marine life, or visit the lightly inhabited islands, including Cayo Centro, Cayo Lobos, and Cayo Norte, which offer tranquil beaches and nesting sites for sea turtles.

Due to its protected status, Banco Chinchorro remains largely undeveloped, preserving its pristine natural state. Access is primarily by boat from the mainland port town of Mahahual. Ecotourism activities emphasize conservation, with limited facilities to reduce environmental impact. The reserve appeals to marine biologists, ecotourists, and adventurers seeking remote and wild Caribbean marine experiences away from the more commercialized coastal resorts.
