About Arnavon Community Marine Conservation Area

The Arnavon Community Marine Conservation Area protects rich coral reefs and vital marine habitats, offering exceptional opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and cultural exploration in the Solomon Islands.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Arnavon Community Marine Conservation Area (ACMCA) spans approximately 157 square kilometers around the Arnavon Islands, located between the provinces of Isabel and Choiseul in the Solomon Islands. It was established in 1995 as the first community-managed marine protected area in the Pacific, focusing on protecting turtle nesting beaches, fish habitats, and coral reef ecosystems. The conservation area includes important nesting sites for the critically endangered leatherback, green, and hawksbill sea turtles. These islands serve as critical breeding grounds, with local communities collaborating to monitor and ensure long-term protection. Rich coral reefs around the islands support diverse marine life, including reef fish, invertebrates, and vibrant coral gardens, making the area popular among snorkelers and scuba divers. Visitors can experience peaceful island beaches alongside traditional Melanesian culture, as nearby villages engage in sustainable fisheries and community conservation efforts. There are no established campgrounds; most accommodations involve simple lodges located on nearby larger islands or villages, accessible primarily by boat. The area is remote and requires logistical planning for access, but its thriving marine ecosystems and community stewardship make it an important model of sustainable conservation and cultural heritage. For nature lovers and marine enthusiasts, ACMCA offers a unique chance to observe endangered turtles, lush reefs, and island landscapes while supporting local conservation initiatives.
