Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Apsan Park, located on the western edge of Daegu, South Korea, is one of the city’s largest urban parks, encompassing the prominent Apsan Mountain. The park covers a significant portion of the mountain, whose sandstone peaks rise to about 672 meters, providing a natural retreat within the bustling metropolitan area. The park’s dense mixed forests of pine and oak support a wide range of native flora and fauna, making it a biodiversity hotspot and popular spot for nature enthusiasts. Historically, Apsan Mountain served as a strategic vantage point during the Korean War, and remnants such as military tunnels and observation posts remain as cultural landmarks today. Visitors can enjoy over 20 kilometers of marked hiking paths that vary in difficulty, culminating in breathtaking views of Daegu city and the Nakdong River valley from observation platforms and the iconic Apsan Observatory. The park also features Buddhist temples including the Apsan Hermitage, recreational areas, and cable car access to the summit, enabling accessibility for visitors of all skill levels. Beyond hiking, Apsan Park accommodates mountain biking, picnicking, and photography. Seasonal changes bring beautiful wildflower blooms in spring and brilliant autumn foliage that draws large crowds. The park serves as a vital green lung for Daegu, combining natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor recreation opportunities within an accessible urban setting.
