About Aberdare National Park

Aberdare National Park

Aberdare National Park spans the rugged slopes of the Aberdare Mountain Range in central Kenya. Covering elevations from approximately 2,000 to over 4,000 meters, the park features highland forests, bamboo zones, moorlands, and alpine meadows. Its diverse ecosystems support abundant wildlife including elephants, black rhinos, bongo antelope, leopards, and over 250 bird species. Historically, the Aberdares were declared a forest reserve in 1930 and later established as a national park in 1950 to protect its unique flora and fauna. Visitors are drawn to the scenic landscape punctuated by waterfalls such as the Karuru Falls—one of Kenya’s highest—rivers, and dramatic cliffs. Outdoor activities include game drives, bush walks, and mountain hiking with opportunities to spot elusive animals in a cooler, less dry climate compared to other Kenyan parks. The park also plays a vital role as a water catchment area for several rivers supplying Nairobi and other surrounding regions. Accommodation options range from forest lodges to tented camps, with the park's relative proximity to Nairobi making it a convenient escape for nature lovers. Aberdare National Park offers an immersive experience in Kenya’s montane wilderness with a blend of scenic beauty and wildlife, suited for both adventurous visitors and those seeking quiet nature encounters.
