About Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon Protected Area

The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon Protected Area preserves one of the world's deepest and longest canyons, offering striking landscapes and exceptional biodiversity at high altitudes.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon Protected Area encompasses the dramatic gorge carved by the Yarlung Tsangpo River as it flows through the eastern Himalayas in Tibet Autonomous Region, China. Stretching over 500 kilometers, this canyon is considered the deepest in the world, with vertical drops exceeding 5,500 meters. The protected area features rugged, steep terrain and altitudes ranging from roughly 1,500 to over 5,000 meters, creating a diversity of climatic zones—from subtropical forests at lower elevations to alpine meadows and glaciers higher up. The ecology is remarkable, supporting rare and endangered species such as the elusive takin, snub-nosed monkeys, and Himalayan blue sheep, alongside a rich variety of endemic plants. Historically, the canyon region has been culturally significant to Tibetan communities and offers insight into local traditions and lifestyles. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn primarily to trekking expeditions and river rafting, although the area's remoteness and challenging access require careful planning. There are few established trails, making it a destination for adventurous hikers and explorers seeking pristine wilderness and dramatic vistas. The region also contains important geological formations and ancient forest ecosystems. The protected area provides opportunities for wildlife observation, high-mountain photography, and cultural encounters in isolated villages. Due to its size and ecological importance, it is a major focus for conservation efforts, balancing protection with sustainable tourism development.
