About Odaesan National Park

Odaesan National Park

Odaesan National Park spans the eastern region of Gangwon Province and is distinguished by its five prominent peaks—known collectively as 'Odaesan,' meaning 'Five Platforms Mountain.' The park covers forested ridges formed by the Taebaek Mountains, featuring mixed hardwood and coniferous forests, and hosting a diverse range of flora such as Korean fir, Mongolian oak, and rare species like the Manchurian fir. Its elevation varies from about 300 to over 1,500 meters, creating varied microclimates that support wildlife including Asiatic black bears, musk deer, and a variety of bird species. Established in 1975, the park is famous not only for its natural beauty but also cultural heritage, with historic Buddhist temples including Woljeongsa and Sangwonsa, which provide visitors with spiritual and architectural highlights. Recreational activities are centered on well-maintained hiking trails that range from easy walks to challenging climbs, offering panoramic lookout points and opportunities to explore forested valleys and mountain ridges. In winter, the park gains popularity for snow-related activities and serene snowy landscapes. Odaesan is appreciated for its tranquil environment, combining ecological preservation with cultural tourism, and remains a favored destination for visitors seeking nature, history, and outdoor adventure within a protected setting.
