About Mu Ko Similan National Park

Mu Ko Similan National Park

Mu Ko Similan National Park comprises an archipelago of nine granite islands located in the Andaman Sea off the west coast of Thailand, within Phang Nga Province. Established in 1982, this park protects some of Thailand’s most spectacular underwater environments, featuring extensive coral reefs, sea grass beds, and varied marine species including manta rays, whale sharks, and sea turtles. The islands themselves are characterized by white sandy beaches, dramatic granite boulders, and lush tropical vegetation. Above water, there are limited hiking trails to viewpoints offering panoramic vistas over the islands and sea. The park's accessibility is primarily by boat, often from Khao Lak or Phuket, reflecting its seclusion and pristine conditions. Key recreation opportunities revolve around snorkeling, scuba diving, photography, and bird watching. Camping is allowed at a designated site on one of the islands, though visitors must adhere to strict conservation rules to protect the delicate ecosystem. The park's underwater topography features intriguing dive sites such as Elephant Head Rock and East of Eden, which draw divers worldwide. Due to its ecological importance and popularity, Mu Ko Similan is a protected marine sanctuary with seasonal closures (usually May to October) to allow reef recovery. The park appeals to both nature lovers and adventure seekers looking for tropical underwater exploration combined with stunning island scenery. It represents one of Thailand’s top destinations for experiencing vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine biodiversity in a relatively undisturbed, natural setting.
