About Hemis National Park

Hemis National Park

Hemis National Park, located in the eastern part of the Ladakh region in India, spans a vast area of the Trans-Himalayan belt. The park is characterized by dramatic mountains, deep gorges, and riverine landscapes. As one of the largest national parks in India, it covers extensive alpine regions and is most famous for being one of the premier habitats for the endangered snow leopard. Besides the snow leopard, the park is home to other wildlife including the Tibetan wolf, Eurasian brown bear, and a variety of bird species such as the Himalayan griffon vulture. Established in 1981, the park also hosts several ancient monasteries, including the Hemis Monastery, which is a cultural and historical landmark. Trekking is a popular activity, with trails that offer both challenges and stunning views, particularly useful for photographers and wildlife observers. The barren yet beautiful landscape attracts those seeking adventure and tranquility.
