Mapungubwe National Park (South Africa, adjacent region)

Mapungubwe National Park is located in the Limpopo Province of South Africa at the convergence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, near the borders with Botswana and Zimbabwe. The park encompasses the remains of the Kingdom of Mapungubwe, which thrived around the 11th century and is considered southern Africa’s first known kingdom, providing rich archaeological and cultural insights. Covering a diverse sandstone plateau, the park showcases a combination of riverine forest, savanna, and mopane woodland ecosystems that support a rich variety of flora and fauna. Its open plains and rocky outcrops provide prime habitats for animals such as elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and African wild dogs, making it a key conservation area within the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Park. Visitors can explore several heritage sites where ancient artifacts like the famous Golden Rhinoceros were found. The park also offers guided walks, game drives, birdwatching, and opportunities to experience local Venda culture nearby. The dramatic landscape features cliffs and the sprawling Limpopo River valley, with scenic viewpoints overlooking historic ruins. Mapungubwe National Park appeals to visitors seeking both nature and history, blending archaeology with wildlife observation in a unique African environment. Facilities include a well-managed camp and picnic areas with various options for overnight stays. The park’s protected status promotes sustainable tourism while preserving its critical cultural and biological resources.
