About Ang Thong Marine National Park

Ang Thong Marine National Park

Ang Thong Marine National Park, established in 1980, encompasses 42 islands covering a total area of approximately 102 square kilometers in the Gulf of Thailand, west of Koh Samui. The park features dramatic limestone karst islands rising sharply from the sea, hidden lagoons, pristine white sandy beaches, and dense tropical forests. Its diverse marine ecosystem supports a variety of coral species, tropical fish, and other marine life, making it a prime destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. The park’s islands provide excellent opportunities for hiking, particularly trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the emerald waters and surrounding archipelago. Among the most popular islands is Koh Wua Talap, which has a visitor center and a viewpoint reachable by a moderately steep hike. Visitors also frequent the sheltered lagoons and caves, which are accessible by small boats and kayaks. The park is accessible only by boat, most commonly from Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. Ang Thong’s remote and largely undeveloped nature offers a tranquil escape for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and photographers. Protected by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, the park preserves coral reefs and marine biodiversity, while offering recreational activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking. Its varied landscapes and aquatic environments create a remarkable backdrop for day trips and overnight camping on select islands. It remains a vital conservation area amid growing tourism pressure in the region.
