About Skomer Island National Nature Reserve

Skomer Island National Nature Reserve is a vital seabird sanctuary off the coast of Pembrokeshire, renowned for its large populations of puffins, manx shearwaters, and diverse coastal wildlife.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located approximately 2 kilometers off the coast of Pembrokeshire in southwest Wales, Skomer Island National Nature Reserve covers about 2.78 square kilometers of rugged cliffs, heathland, grassland, and sandy beaches. The island’s volcanic origins and rich maritime environment support an exceptional variety of flora and fauna, making it one of the UK’s most important wildlife habitats. Skomer is internationally recognized for its seabird colonies, particularly the largest population of Atlantic puffins in southern Britain, with tens of thousands breeding annually. Other notable birds include Manx shearwaters, razorbills, guillemots, and kestrels. The island’s extensive network of burrows also provides refuge for the rare Skomer vole, found only on this island. Apart from birdwatching, visitors can enjoy coastal viewing platforms offering perspectives on dramatic cliffs and marine life including seals and dolphins. Access is via seasonal boat trips from the mainland, with visitor numbers regulated to protect breeding colonies. The reserve has a long history of scientific observation dating back to the early 20th century and continues to provide valuable research on seabird ecology and conservation. Visitors are drawn to Skomer for its wildlife viewing opportunities, rugged natural beauty, and the chance to explore a relatively undisturbed island ecosystem. Trails circling the island offer scenic walks that combine birdwatching with panoramic views of the surrounding sea and nearby islands such as Skokholm and Grassholm.
