About Timpanogos Cave National Monument

Timpanogos Cave National Monument is located on the slopes of Mount Timpanogos in the Wasatch Range of Utah. The monument protects a remarkable cave system consisting of three main caves: Hansen Cave, Middle Cave, and Timpanogos Cave. These caves are known for their dramatic and intricate dripstone formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, and flowstones. Visitors reach the caves by hiking a strenuous 1.5-mile trail that climbs more than 1,000 feet through steep forested slopes, offering views of alpine meadows, wildflowers, and surrounding peaks. Established in 1922 to preserve these unique geological features and provide public access, the monument also emphasizes education on cave ecology and conservation. The caves remain cool and damp year-round, providing a contrast to the warmer summer temperatures outside. Timpanogos Cave is popular with hikers, geology enthusiasts, and families seeking a memorable guided tour of a pristine cave environment. Tours are ranger-led and provide detailed information about cave formation, geology, and wildlife. The access hike itself challenges visitors with rigors of elevation and uneven terrain while rewarding with beautiful mountain scenery and a rewarding discovery of the caves’ sparkling interiors. The monument lies near the town of American Fork with easy day-trip access from the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, making it a favored destination for outdoor recreation and nature study.
