About Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Located in Lake Huron along Michigan’s northeastern shore, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary covers approximately 4,300 square miles of freshwater marine environment. Established in 2000, it is dedicated to preserving one of the most extensive shipwreck concentrations in the Great Lakes, protecting over 100 identified wreck sites. The sanctuary spans from Alpena to Rogers City and includes a variety of maritime habitats including reefs, submerged shorelines, and deep open water. The sanctuary’s cold, fresh water preserves shipwrecks in amazing condition, making it a globally important site for maritime archaeology. Beyond historical significance, the sanctuary supports diverse aquatic species and offers habitat for lake trout, whitefish, and migratory birds. Recreational opportunities center around scuba diving, snorkeling, and glass-bottom boat tours that enable visitors to view shipwrecks safely above and below the water. Educational programs and interpretive exhibits at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena deepen public understanding of the region’s maritime history. Shoreline activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and fishing are popular alongside lake-based adventures. The sanctuary’s unique blend of natural wonders and cultural heritage attracts divers, historians, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Strict regulations protect shipwrecks from disturbance, ensuring these underwater relics remain accessible for future generations.
