About Pawnee National Grasslands

Located in northeastern Colorado, Pawnee National Grasslands spans over 193,000 acres of protected shortgrass prairie within the High Plains. This area preserves a rare ecosystem dominated by native grasses, mixed prairie wildflowers, and scattered shrubs. Its flat to gently rolling terrain features historic ranching landscapes, sweeping grassland vistas, and unique geological formations including badlands and sandstone outcrops. The grasslands support diverse wildlife, including pronghorn antelope, mule deer, coyotes, swift fox, and numerous bird species such as the prairie falcon and burrowing owl, making it a destination for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers. Historically, the land was homesteaded and used for cattle grazing, and remnants of old homesteads and historic CCC structures can still be explored. Outdoor recreation opportunities encompass hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, hunting, and dispersed backpacking. There are multiple scenic drives showcasing the wide-open prairie, particularly the Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic and Historic Byway. Visitors can experience night skies with virtually no light pollution, providing exceptional stargazing. The region’s semi-arid climate results in hot summers and cold winters, with spring and fall being the most comfortable seasons for outdoor activities. Despite its remote location, Pawnee National Grasslands offers a quiet and unspoiled setting for those seeking a connection to open prairie landscapes, wildlife, and Colorado’s natural heritage.
