Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

William B. Bankhead National Recreation Area, situated in the rich and varied landscape of northwestern Alabama, is renowned for its dense woodlands, waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems. Covering over 180,000 acres, it is Alabama's largest national forest, providing habitats for a wide array of species, including the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker. The recreation area is named in honor of Congressman William B. Bankhead and is famed for its natural beauty, highlighted by the Sipsey Wilderness—a prime destination for hikers and nature lovers. Visitors can explore an extensive trail network, which offers access to stunning geological formations, canyons, and rock shelters reflective of the region's ancient history.
