Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The University of Maine Research Forest comprises over 8,000 acres of diverse forestland located primarily in Orono, Maine. Managed by the University’s School of Forest Resources, the forest serves as a living laboratory for forestry research, ecological studies, and long-term monitoring of forest management techniques. The terrain features mixed hardwood and softwood stands, wetlands, riparian areas, and several small streams and ponds. Its landscape supports a wide range of native wildlife including white-tailed deer, moose, black bear, and numerous bird species. The forest's history is rooted in sustainable forest management and academic research aimed at balancing timber production with ecological integrity. Outdoor recreation opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing on a network of maintained trails that weave through varying forest types and ecosystems. Key landmarks include the UMaine Experimental Forest headquarters and multiple research plots illustrating different silvicultural practices. The forest attracts students, researchers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike, providing a hands-on experience of Maine’s working forests.
