About Tawau Hills Park

Tawau Hills Park is a tropical rainforest reserve known for its pristine biodiversity, volcanic landscapes, and picturesque waterfalls, offering visitors hiking, wildlife viewing, and nature exploration in the Malaysian state of Sabah.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Tawau Hills Park, located approximately 22 kilometers west of Tawau town in Sabah, Malaysia, is a forest reserve and protected area established in 1979. The park covers a volcanic landscape formed over 40 million years ago, featuring lowland dipterocarp rainforest and a complex ecosystem rich in flora and fauna. The park’s elevation rises to the summit of Gunung Magdalena at 1,280 meters (4,199 feet), offering cooler temperatures and unique montane habitats. Tawau Hills Park is home to various species including gibbons, macaques, clouded leopards, and numerous bird species, making it a prime destination for wildlife observation.

The park is renowned for its network of well-maintained hiking trails leading visitors to several scenic waterfalls such as Mahua and Mahua Waterfalls, which serve as popular picnic and swimming spots. The trails range from easy walks suitable for families to more challenging routes to Gunung Magdalena’s peak. Natural mineral springs and hot springs can also be found within the park, adding to its recreational appeal. Visitors appreciate the park’s serene rivers, dense forest canopy, and the opportunity to experience tropical biodiversity close to Tawau town. The park’s facilities include basic rest areas and camping grounds maintained by Sabah Parks, inviting visitors to extend their stay.

Tawau Hills Park is important for conservation efforts, protecting fragile rainforest ecosystems while promoting ecotourism. Its proximity to Tawau makes it accessible for day trips or overnight adventures, balancing natural preservation with outdoor recreation. The park’s volcanic origins are evident in the rugged terrain and fertile soils that support diverse plant communities, including many endemic species.
