About Tapajós National Forest

Tapajós National Forest is a vast protected tropical rainforest in Pará, Brazil, offering rich biodiversity and opportunities for ecological research and low-impact recreation along the Tapajós River basin.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Tapajós National Forest is a federally protected sustainable use forest located in the state of Pará in northern Brazil. Established in 1974, it covers an extensive area within the Amazon Basin, characterized by dense tropical rainforest, diverse flora and fauna, and important freshwater systems including sections of the Tapajós River and its tributaries. The terrain is predominantly lowland with occasional plateaus and hills, supporting a rich ecosystem that includes hardwood trees, diverse bird species, primates, reptiles, and fish. The forest plays a critical role in carbon storage, water regulation, and habitat preservation within the Amazon biome. Tapajós National Forest is managed by Brazil’s Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) with a focus on sustainable forest use and conservation. It provides opportunities for scientific research, environmental education, and traditional community livelihoods including sustainable extraction of timber and non-timber products. Visitors can engage in ecotourism activities such as hiking, birdwatching, fishing, and boat tours on the Tapajós River. The forest's remote location and conditions mean visitor infrastructure is limited but the experience offers an immersive look at one of the Amazon’s less disturbed areas. The region has cultural significance for local indigenous and riverine communities who maintain traditions tied to the forest. Tapajós National Forest is part of a broader network of Amazonian protected areas critical for maintaining ecological connectivity and protecting biodiversity amid ongoing pressures from deforestation and development.
