Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Talimena National Scenic Byway Corridor stretches approximately 54 miles between Talihina, Oklahoma, and Mena, Arkansas, traversing the high ridges of the Ouachita Mountains. Located primarily within the Ouachita National Forest, the corridor is renowned for its vibrant fall foliage, rugged landscape, and ecologically rich mixed oak and pine forests. This scenic route provides accessible viewpoints with breathtaking overlooks that reveal valleys, mountain ridges, and far-reaching horizons. The region is home to diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species, making it popular for wildlife observation.

Historically, the byway follows one of the oldest travel corridors in the region and connects several trailheads for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The byway includes access to the Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area and the rich cultural heritage of surrounding communities where Native American history and early European settler influence remain evident. Visitors are drawn to the corridor not only for its scenic driving but also for outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, and horseback riding. Key landmarks include picturesque overlooks like Queen Wilhelmina State Park in Arkansas, which also features lodging and hiking access. Seasonal wildflowers, rugged ridges, and clear mountain streams add to the corridor's natural appeal. The corridor is managed to balance recreation with preservation of its unique mountain ecosystem within the Ouachita National Forest.
