Covering approximately 2,600 hectares, the forest was originally planted with conifers after World War I and has grown to support a mix of pine, oak, and other tree species, providing a habitat for a variety of wildlife including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Managed by Forestry England, Swinley offers a diverse range of landscapes consisting of dense pine stands, open heathland, and wide trails. The forest is renowned for its world-class mountain biking trails, including The Loop, and paths suitable for walkers, runners, equestrians, and orienteers.
