Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Sonian Forest, known locally as the Forêt de Soignes, extends over more than 4,400 hectares on the southeastern edge of Brussels, Belgium. This forested area is renowned for its impressive beech tree stands, some towering over 200 years old, forming a canopy that provides shelter to a variety of wildlife including deer and wild boar. Rich in history, the forest has been a vital natural resource and royal hunting ground since medieval times. Outdoor activities flourish here, from hiking and cycling along the well-marked trails to birdwatching in its quieter corners. The forest is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.
