About Rostock Heath (Rostocker Heide)

Rostock Heath (Rostocker Heide) is an extensive forested nature reserve near the Baltic coast, offering diverse outdoor recreation from hiking and biking to wildlife observation within a historically rich landscape.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rostock Heath, known locally as Rostocker Heide, is a large, ancient forest area located immediately southeast of the city of Rostock along Germany's Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Spanning approximately 6,000 hectares, it is one of the largest contiguous forest areas in the region and has served as a protected communal hunting ground since the Middle Ages. The heath comprises mostly mixed pine and deciduous forests interspersed with dunes, wetlands, and small lakes, creating a dynamic mosaic of habitats for numerous wildlife species including roe deer, wild boar, red foxes, and a variety of birds such as black storks and woodpeckers. The forest's sandy soils support heathlands and rare plant species, contributing to its ecological importance.

Historically, Rostock Heath was a royal hunting ground for centuries, with several hunting lodges and the famous Kühlungsborn hunting manor now serving as cultural landmarks. Today, it functions as a popular recreational landscape for residents and visitors who enjoy hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and nature photography. A network of well-maintained trails guides visitors through diverse ecosystems, while designated nature observation points provide opportunities for peaceful wildlife watching. The proximity to Rostock also makes the heath an accessible green escape from urban life.

Though largely unspoiled, Rostock Heath is managed carefully to balance conservation with outdoor use, emphasizing the protection of its unique flora, fauna, and historical heritage. Its combination of natural beauty, rich history, and recreational paths makes Rostock Heath a quintessential outdoor destination in northern Germany.
