About Puszcza Piska Forest

Puszcza Piska Forest is one of Poland’s largest and most ecologically valuable forest complexes, offering pristine natural landscapes rich in diverse flora and fauna, ideal for immersive outdoor adventures.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in northeastern Poland, Puszcza Piska Forest forms a vast expanse of primeval woodland stretching over approximately 1,000 square kilometers. As part of the Masurian Lake District, the forest is interspersed with picturesque lakes, meandering rivers, and extensive wetlands, contributing to its rich biodiversity. The forest's predominant tree species include Scots pine, Norway spruce, and European beech, with pockets of ancient oak and alder. It provides vital habitat for many rare and protected species such as the European beaver, white-tailed eagle, lynx, and European otter. Historically, the forest has been shaped by centuries of sustainable forestry and limited human settlement, preserving its near-natural character. Visitors enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, and fishing, particularly around the many scenic lakes. Key landmarks include the scenic nature reserves such as Rezerwat Baranowski Ług, notable for its peat bogs and rare plant species, and the town of Pisz, which serves as a gateway to exploring the forest. The area is popular for its peaceful, unspoiled nature, making it a favored destination for nature lovers and those seeking solitude amid tranquil forest and freshwater ecosystems. Winter offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities, while summer provides excellent paddling along the forest’s waterways. With well-marked trails and rich wildlife, Puszcza Piska Forest is an exceptional protected natural treasure in Poland’s landscape.
