About Monarch Crest Trail Area

The Monarch Crest Trail Area is a premier high-alpine trail system in Colorado's Sawatch Range, offering panoramic views, wildflower meadows, and alpine terrain popular for hiking, mountain biking, and backcountry skiing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located within the San Isabel National Forest in central Colorado, the Monarch Crest Trail Area is centered around Monarch Pass on the Continental Divide. The trail traverses roughly 35 miles of ridge-top terrain, reaching elevations around 11,000 to 12,500 feet. This high-elevation trail offers visitors breathtaking views of surrounding mountain peaks, including the Sawatch and Elk Ranges, as well as access to subalpine forests and expansive wildflower meadows during summer months. The flora transitions from dense Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir forests to alpine tundra at higher elevations. Wildlife such as mule deer, elk, marmots, and occasionally black bears can be observed. Historically, Monarch Pass was a critical route over the Continental Divide supporting mining and transportation in the region. Today, the Monarch Crest Trail is recognized for its recreational appeal, used extensively by hikers, mountain bikers, and backcountry skiers. Popular landmarks along the trail include the Monarch Divide overlook and the historic Highway 50 views. The trail connects to various side routes leading into the nearby Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. This trail area appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking scenic high-country adventure accessible within a few hours of major Colorado towns. The area provides opportunities for solitude, wildlife viewing, and challenging yet rewarding physical activity in an alpine environment.
