Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Mindo-Nambillo Cloud Forest Reserve is an ecologically rich protected area located approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Quito in the Pichincha province of Ecuador. This reserve is part of the greater Mindo watershed and encompasses steep, verdant cloud forests between 1,200 and 2,400 meters in elevation. Its cool, misty environment nurtures diverse plant life, including bromeliads, orchids, and moss-covered trees, contributing to one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the Andes. Established to protect this rare habitat, the reserve links several private and communal conservation areas, creating a mosaic of conservation lands. The region is internationally celebrated for its incredible bird diversity, with over 500 species recorded, including the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, toucans, hummingbirds, and tanagers. It is also home to diverse amphibians, mammals like spectacled bears and spectacled monkeys, and countless insects. Outdoor recreation in the reserve is vibrant: visitors can hike a variety of trails passing through cascading waterfalls, suspended bridges, and hummingbird feeders; go tubing or rafting on nearby rivers; or explore butterfly farms and orchid gardens. The reserve’s blend of accessible, well-maintained trails and remote forested areas makes it a top destination for nature lovers and adventure travelers alike. Its proximity to Quito facilitates easy day visits or longer eco-lodging stays. The combination of spectacular wildlife viewing, cool climate, and pristine forest ambiance creates an unforgettable experience for visitors seeking immersive mountain cloud forest exploration.
