About Laurisilva Forest of Madeira Natural Park

Laurisilva Forest of Madeira Natural Park is a lush, ancient subtropical rainforest offering striking biodiversity, dramatic landscapes, and renowned hiking trails through one of Europe's last laurel forests.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Laurisilva Forest of Madeira Natural Park, situated on the Portuguese island of Madeira, features one of the largest surviving laurel forest ecosystems, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1999. Covering much of Madeira’s mountainous interior, this forest developed over millions of years under stable, humid climatic conditions and is characterized by its evergreen laurel trees, including species such as Ocotea foetens and Laurus novocanariensis. The park’s rugged terrain includes steep cliffs, deep ravines, and a network of levada irrigation channels, which guide visitors along verdant paths through the forest. Ecologically, the park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to endemic flora and fauna including rare birds like the Madeira firecrest and laurel pigeon. Historically, the forest was vastly cleared for agriculture and settlement but has since been protected to preserve its unique environment. Popular for outdoor enthusiasts, the park offers extensive hiking opportunities, ranging from short walks along levadas to challenging mountain routes like Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro. Visitors are drawn to the mist-filled canopy, lush understory, and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and volcanic landscapes. The Laurisilva Forest represents both a vital natural refuge and a cultural treasure reflecting Madeira’s natural heritage and traditional land management practices.
