About Honokaa Forest Reserve

Honokaa Forest Reserve is a verdant protected area on the northeastern slopes of Mauna Kea, offering diverse native ecosystems and serene hiking opportunities near the town of Honokaa on Hawaii Island.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Honokaa Forest Reserve, located on the windward side of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii, comprises a diverse range of native rainforests, upland shrublands, and riparian zones. The reserve covers steep valleys and ridges that support many endemic Hawaiian flora and fauna, including native trees such as ʻōhiʻa lehua and koa. Historically, the area was used by native Hawaiians for forest resources and agricultural practices before becoming protected to preserve its unique ecosystems and watershed functions. Today, it provides vital habitat for endangered bird species like the Hawaiian honeycreeper and native insects. The forest receives significant trade winds and rainfall, fostering lush vegetation and cool temperatures compared to coastal areas. Visitors can explore several trails that wind through rich native growth, offering opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and experiencing Hawaii’s natural heritage. The reserve is less developed than other forest parks on the Big Island, maintaining a tranquil atmosphere ideal for those seeking solitude and immersion in native forest environments. Its proximity to the historic town of Honokaa allows access to amenities while retaining a feeling of wilderness. Honokaa Forest Reserve plays an important role in watershed protection, feeding streams and springs critical to downstream communities. Hiking here offers a chance to experience native Hawaiian ecosystems that are increasingly rare across the islands, with the added bonus of elevated cool forest climate at around 3,000 to 5,000 feet elevation. Caution is advised on trails as paths can be steep and muddy during rainy periods. The area is managed for conservation with a goal to protect native species and maintain forest health.
