About Hitchcock Woods

Hitchcock Woods is one of the largest urban hardwood forests in the United States, offering peaceful woodland trails and diverse natural habitats just minutes from downtown Aiken, South Carolina.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Hitchcock Woods encompasses approximately 2,100 acres of mature hardwood forest located on the northeastern edge of Aiken, South Carolina. Its terrain consists primarily of rolling hills, sandy soils, and hardwood species such as oak, hickory, and pine. The forest is ecologically important as a mature urban woodland supporting a variety of native plants and wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Hitchcock Woods is historically significant, having been preserved since the early 20th century following a donation by Thomas Hitchcock, Sr., a prominent horseman and conservationist. Today, Hitchcock Woods is owned and managed by the Hitchcock Woods Foundation and is dedicated to conservation, equestrian pursuits, and public recreation. Visitors enjoy over 70 miles of well-maintained trails that are ideal for hiking, horseback riding, jogging, and birdwatching. Notable landmarks include the Woodlands Equestrian Center and historic carriage trails designed for riding and driving. The forest's proximity to the city of Aiken makes it a unique example of natural preservation integrated within an urban setting. Its shaded trails, serene atmosphere, and rich biodiversity draw locals and visitors seeking quiet outdoor experiences or equestrian activities. Following established trail etiquette ensures the preservation and enjoyment of this special forest.
