Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Hatfield Forest, located in Essex, England, is one of the best-preserved medieval royal forests in the country and is owned and managed by the National Trust. Covering approximately 263 acres (106.6 hectares), this ancient woodland has been a continuous woodland since at least the Domesday Book in 1086. The forest features diverse habitats, including ancient oak pollards, grasslands, marshes, and ponds, supporting a rich variety of wildlife including deer, rare butterflies, birds, and fungi. The forest's management aims to maintain its historic landscape and biodiversity, preserving traditional practices such as coppicing and pollarding trees. Visitors can explore several well-marked trails that range from short strolls to longer circular routes through the forest's varied landscapes. Notable landmarks include Queen's Green, an open grassy area surrounded by mature trees, and the Old River, which runs through the forest creating attractive wetland environments. The forest also contains archaeological remains, including a medieval deer park boundary and ancient earthworks. Hatfield Forest is popular for outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife observation, picnicking, and photography due to its tranquil atmosphere and scenic beauty. The visitor center provides educational displays and information on the area's natural and cultural heritage. Hatfield Forest's blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities makes it a valuable destination for both casual visitors and nature enthusiasts.
