About Guajataca State Forest

Guajataca State Forest is a lush tropical forest in northwest Puerto Rico, known for its limestone karst formations, diverse flora, and excellent opportunities for hiking and birdwatching.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Guajataca State Forest, located in the northwest region of Puerto Rico across the municipalities of Quebradillas, San Sebastián, and Isabela, is one of the island's most important protected areas showcasing tropical karst topography. Characterized by rugged limestone hills, caves, sinkholes, and mogotes (steep, isolated hills), this forest is an ecological refuge rich with native species and dense vegetation. It harbors a subtropical moist forest ecosystem featuring species such as Sierra Palm, West Indian Mahogany, and numerous orchids. The forest's elevation ranges from about 300 to 1,000 feet, creating varied microhabitats, including dry limestone forests and shaded ravines. Historically, the region has cultural significance as the karst formed natural barriers and provided shelter for indigenous Taíno populations. Today, Guajataca offers an array of outdoor activities—its well-marked trails invite visitors to traverse scenic overlooks, explore caves, and spot birds like the Puerto Rican Emerald hummingbird and the endangered Puerto Rican boa. Notable landmarks include the Mirador de Guajataca, a viewpoint offering spectacular vistas of the forest and nearby Guajataca Lake. The forest's unique limestone formations provide opportunities for rock climbing and photography. With picnic areas and informal camping spots, Guajataca State Forest appeals to nature lovers, hikers, and families seeking a tropical forest experience off the beaten path. The area is managed by Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and continues to play a key role in local biodiversity conservation and environmental education.
