About Fulton Chain Wild Forest

Fulton Chain Wild Forest is a vast protected area within New York’s Adirondack Park offering diverse outdoor activities including hiking, camping, fishing, and paddling across rugged terrain and numerous lakes.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Fulton Chain Wild Forest spans over 38,000 acres in the central Adirondack Park of upstate New York. The area is named after the Fulton Chain of Lakes, a sequence of eight connected lakes that provides extensive opportunities for water-based recreation. The forest features a varied landscape of mixed hardwood and coniferous forests, wetlands, rocky outcrops, and multiple ponds, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna. This area is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking activities such as hiking along well-maintained trails, camping at several established sites, fishing for trout and bass, and paddling on serene lakes and streams. The forest is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), allowing for diverse uses with moderate development compared to stricter wilderness designations. Historically, the Fulton Chain region was utilized for logging and small settlements, but has since been restored and preserved to maintain its natural character. Notable landmarks include the scenic Rainbow Falls, Third Lake, and several islands offering backcountry camping. The area supports abundant wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species. Visitors can enjoy access to trailheads from nearby towns and make use of multiple boat launches. The combination of water and trails makes it a versatile outdoor destination year-round, with winter snowmobiling and cross-country skiing also popular in colder months. The forest provides a managed balance of recreation and habitat conservation, appealing to family campers, anglers, paddlers, and hikers alike.
