About FRIM

FRIM (Forest Research Institute Malaysia) is a premier forest reserve offering rich biodiversity, well-maintained trails, and a peaceful nature experience just outside Kuala Lumpur.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is a renowned tropical rainforest reserve located in Kepong, near Kuala Lumpur. Established in 1926 primarily for research purposes, FRIM now serves as both a vital conservation area and a popular public green space. The 600-hectare reserve is characterized by mature tropical rainforest with towering dipterocarp trees, diverse plant species, and varied wildlife, making it a key site for ecological studies and conservation. Visitors can explore numerous well-marked trails that wind through the primary forest, reaching canopy walkways and waterfalls such as the iconic Bukit Gasing and the tranquil Gasing Waterfall. FRIM offers a blend of scientific heritage and recreational opportunities, with botanical gardens, research facilities, and nature trails all within reach. The canopy walkway, a suspension bridge suspended high above the forest floor, allows visitors to experience the upper forest layers and spot unique bird species and insects. Recreational opportunities include hiking, jogging, birdwatching, picnicking, and educational tours. The reserve is also home to a bamboo grove, a medicinal garden, and the Rainforest Boardwalk. Visitors appreciate the accessibility from Kuala Lumpur combined with the serene forest atmosphere. Additionally, FRIM plays a significant role in forest conservation and environmental education in Malaysia. The reserve is actively managed for research and sustainable tourism, ensuring protection of its natural resources. It is also a venue for events promoting environmental awareness. Overall, FRIM is a living laboratory and a green oasis that supports both biodiversity and outdoor recreation within an urban context.
