Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Forbes State Forest spans over 60,000 acres in southwestern Pennsylvania, stretching across the Laurel Highlands. Established in 1909 and named after British General John Forbes, the forest plays a key role in protecting headwaters and providing habitat for diverse wildlife. The geography includes rugged ridges, valleys, and high plateaus that make the area ideal for various outdoor activities. The landscape supports a mix of hardwoods and coniferous trees, which provide vibrant autumn foliage and year-round scenic beauty. Recreational opportunities abound with miles of trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. The forest also hosts unique features like Spruce Flats Bog, a high-altitude peat bog, offering critical habitat for unique flora and fauna. Visitors are drawn to the forest for its peaceful natural beauty, opportunities for solitude, and the chance to catch a glimpse of the diverse wildlife, including deer, black bears, and numerous bird species.
