Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Detweiller Park Forest Preserve is one of the largest and most popular forest preserves managed by the Peoria Park District, located northwest of Peoria, Illinois. This preserve covers over 2,000 acres of diverse terrain including forested hills, open meadows, creeks, and man-made lakes such as Lake Detweiller. The preserve provides a habitat for a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, songbirds, and native plants, making it a favored spot for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Historically, the area was enlisted as a public recreational space in the early 20th century and has since grown to become a hub for outdoor recreation in central Illinois.
